An Efficient Morning Through Westminster Before the Coaches Arrive
Route through Parliament Square and Westminster Abbey before the coach groups arrive at 10am, then exit via Whitehall and St James's Park.
An Efficient Morning Through Westminster Before the Coaches Arrive
The common assumption about Westminster is that you wake up early, head to Parliament Square, and the crowds are manageable. That is wrong. By 10:15 coach parking bays on Great George Street and Great Smith Street fill with 30-plus tour buses. The pavements along Parliament Square become a wall of bodies. The single reliable way to see the ceremonial core without the crush is to build a morning around an 8:30am pre-booked slot at Westminster Abbey, and that is the exact logic of this route. Westminster before the coaches lasts from 8:00 until 10:00, and every moment inside that window is worth planning for.
Westminster Abbey Early Entry: the 09:30 Slot
Westminster Abbey opens for timed tourist entry at 09:30 Monday through Saturday. The last slot is 15:30 Monday to Friday and 13:30 on Saturday. On Sundays the Abbey is open for worship only, with no tourist access. Pre-book online at westminster-abbey.org. Tickets are released weekly, each Wednesday at 10:00 for the following week. The Abbey sets its own prices; as of 2026 an advance adult ticket costs £29 and a walk-up ticket costs £30. The difference is small, but the real advantage of booking ahead is controlling your time slot.
Why 09:30 Works
Arrive at the Abbey security queue at 09:15. At that hour the queue runs five to ten minutes. Between 10:30 and 14:00 from April through October the same queue peaks at 30 to 45 minutes. Entering at 09:30 puts you in the nave before the first rush. Poets' Corner is navigable. The space reads as a vertical Gothic interior rather than a scrum of selfie sticks. The included audio guide is available in 14 languages and you pick it up just past the ticket desk. If you want the verger-guided tour, the Abbey charges a supplement for 90 minutes starting at 09:45; check the website for the current rate. The Cellarium Café on site opens at 09:00, but the queue for seating forms by 11:30; eat beforehand at Pret A Manger, 1 Great Smith Street, open from 07:00.
Seeing Parliament Without Crowds: the Walk Through Parliament Square
From Westminster station take Exit 4. Walk toward Parliament Square. The west side of the square on St Margaret Street is the correct photo point for the Abbey west front. Before 10:00 no coaches block the sightline. After 10:15 the open-top commentary from tour buses on Parliament Square becomes audible across the whole space. Cross to the Houses of Parliament side. The best view of the Palace of Westminster is from the pavement on Bridge Street looking south west, and again the 8:00 to 10:00 window keeps the foreground clear. St Margaret's Church on the square is free, open 09:30 to 15:30 Monday to Friday, and takes 15 minutes. The Jewel Tower on Abingdon Street opens at 10:00, adult entry set by English Heritage; check their site for the latest price. It rarely queues, but it opens just as your coach window closes, so skip it on this route.
Westminster Walking Route Morning: Abbey to War Rooms to Park
Exit Westminster Abbey at approximately 10:45. Cross Victoria Tower Gardens toward the Churchill War Rooms on King Charles Street. The War Rooms open at 09:30 daily. Last admission is 17:00. Imperial War Museums sets the adult price, which in 2026 is £33, and tickets are released up to 90 days ahead in 15-minute slots on iwm.org.uk. Arrive at 10:50. At that time the queue is still zero to ten minutes. By 11:00 on weekends and school holidays the walk-up queue hits 30 to 60 minutes and the next available slot often jumps to 14:00 or later. The minimum visit is 90 minutes. The audio guide is included and the route through the museum is mandatory; there is no shortcut to the Cabinet War Rooms. Mobile signal is nonexistent below ground, so download your ticket before you enter. The Switch Room Café mid-route seats 40, with a queue for hot food of 10 to 15 minutes from 12:00. Exit the War Rooms around 12:30.
Exit Through St James's Park
From the War Rooms take the Clive Steps exit, cross Horse Guards Road, and enter St James's Park at the Horse Guards Parade gate. Walk distance from the Abbey to the park exit at The Mall is 1.8 kilometres. Walk time without stops is 25 minutes. The Blue Bridge to Buckingham Palace is an eight-minute walk from the park entrance. The pelican colony lives on Duck Island east of the Blue Bridge. The Royal Parks service rents deckchairs from March to October; pay by contactless and check their site for the hourly rate. The free public toilet near Storey's Gate opens at 08:00. Exit the park at Marlborough Gate onto The Mall. From there it is a five-minute walk to Charing Cross station or eight minutes to Piccadilly Circus. Total visit time with the early start is 3 hours 45 minutes.
Houses of Parliament Photography Spots: Before the Coaches Block the View
The best photography spot for the Houses of Parliament is the west side pavement of Parliament Square on St Margaret Street. Use it before 10:00. After that, coach parking bays on Great George Street and Victoria Street fill and the open-top buses dominate the foreground. For a shot of the Palace of Westminster from the south, walk onto Westminster Bridge and shoot north west toward the clock tower. That spot stays coach-free because buses do not park on the bridge. For the Abbey west front, the same St Margaret Street pavement is correct, and the light is best from 08:30 to 09:30. After 10:15 the shadows shift and the coach line forms. The colonnade along the west front of the Abbey provides rain shelter if you need it.
Changing of the Guard: Horse Guards Parade Over Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace Changing of the Guard draws thousands. The ceremony is visible from the forecourt railings, and the crowd is deep by 10:30. The better alternative is Horse Guards Parade on Whitehall. The ceremony there starts at 11:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 on Sunday. View from the Whitehall side. The crowd is smaller, the ceremony is shorter, and you can arrive at 10:50 without a 30-minute stakeout. The Changing of the Guard is not visible from inside St James's Park paths. It is inside the Horse Guards Parade grounds or the Palace forecourt only. On this route you will be inside the Churchill War Rooms at 11:00. If you want to watch, swap the order: enter the Abbey at 09:30, exit at 10:45, walk up Whitehall to Horse Guards Parade for 11:00, then visit the War Rooms at 12:00. That swap adds 30 minutes to the walk and pushes your park exit to 14:00.
What Goes Wrong and How to Avoid it
If you start at 10:30 the Abbey security queue runs 30 minutes, the War Rooms sell out until 14:00, the park paths are crowded, and the deckchairs are fully occupied. The failure case is a half day spent in queues and on the Tube between distant sites. The Tube map is geographically distorted; walking between two adjacent stations is faster than a one-stop ride. The walking distance from Westminster station to St James's Park Tube is 600 metres and seven minutes via Birdcage Walk, but the Tube route takes longer once you factor in the escalators and platform wait. Standing on the left on Tube escalators draws audible fury from commuters. Public toilets are scarce; use the free one in St James's Park near Storey's Gate or the paid facility at Westminster station. Contactless payment works everywhere on this route including deckchair rental. If you need cash, the nearest ATM is Barclays at 1 Parliament Street, corner of Bridge Street.
Alternative Timing: Evensong and the 15:00 Coach Window
If the morning route does not fit your schedule, the secondary coach-free window runs from 15:00 onward. Westminster Abbey offers free entry for Evensong at 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 15:00 on Sunday. No ticket is required. Queue from 30 minutes before at the Great West Door. The service lasts 45 minutes and you see the interior without the tourist flow. After Evensong, the coach parking bays on Great George Street have mostly cleared. The Houses of Parliament photography spots on St Margaret Street are usable again after 15:00, though the light is lower and the square still carries traffic noise. The Churchill War Rooms close at 17:00, so an Evensong-based afternoon cannot include them. That route trades the War Rooms for a quieter Abbey experience and a late afternoon walk through an empty Parliament Square.
